these pockets do not work in tight garments (open up) or in coats (too far to reach). Use cutaway pockets. In coats, use patch pockets, welt pockets or in-seam pockets for other than side seams (princess, yoke, etc)
Pocket back – use either main fabric or add facing from the main fabric, as it will show slightly when worn.
In seam pockets: the pocket front and the pocket back are sewn to seam allowances.
Otherwise:
If seams are finished together (most common)
Serge the pockets to the front and back. Understitch. Sew side seams leaving pocket opening free. Serge all seam allowances together from the top of the garment to the hem.
Thick fabrics – separately. Easiest thing to do is to finish all seams before assembly. Otherwise: Sew the pocket front and back to the garment front and back. Clip BACK seam allowance. Finish garment back seam allowance – top, middle and bottom portion separately or overlock together and after clipping use glue. Flip the pocket to the front and sew with a sewing machine catching all layers. Overlock garment front seam allowance continuing to pocket.
